An effective deterrent against rabbits and game due to its intense odour. Protein-rich natural fertilisers of animal origin are traditionally used to deter game. Blood meal and fish meal have long been known for this purpose. Hair meal pellets are made from pure, ground pig bristles, hygienised and pressed into 4 mm pellets without additives.

Nutrients:

14 % N
 organically bound nitrogen
0.8 % P
0.3 % K

MgO 0.1%, CaO 1.7% - S 1.7%, boron 50 ppm, iron 180 ppm, copper 20 ppm, zinc 200 ppm, organic matter: 98%, pH influence: neutral
Pollutants, impurities: All undesirable accompanying substances such as heavy metals and chlorinated hydrocarbons are below the detection limit or far below the limit values of the Fertiliser Ordinance.

Effect as a fertiliser:
Faster than horn meal and castor meal. Depending on weather conditions and soil moisture, first effect after just under a week to two weeks. Effective until approx. 6-10 weeks after application.

Sedumin hair meal pellets are approved without restriction for organic cultivation in accordance with Regulation 2092/91/EEC and are registered in the Infoxgen catalogue of inputs (www.infoxgen.com) and authorised for BIO-Austria farms.

Extensive application for deterrence and fertilisation:

Vegetable growing:
With sowing, possibly top dressing

Fruit growing:
First application mid/end of January, second application mid April/beginning of May at flowering.
If you require 100 kg of nitrogen per hectare, you will need 770 kg of hair meal pellets, i.e. just under a pallet. 1 pallet = 35 x 25 kg = 875 kg corresponding to approx. 120 kg N

Application at the edge of the field or bed only for deterrence:

Spread approx. 25 kg of hair meal pellets over 100-150 m of verges. For large-scale application, e.g. against deer in young vineyards, spread approx. 250 kg per hectare in the rows or just under 1 handful around each plant.

In recent years, when using hair meal pellets as a nitrogen fertiliser, it has been observed that less or no game browsing occurs on the treated plots. When used as a shallowly incorporated fertiliser, the deterrent effect can be observed for approx. 2-3 weeks, finally diminishing due to the increasing conversion in the soil.

The deterrent odour persists for about 3-4 weeks with fertilisers spread on the soil - if the hair meal pellets have not been washed into the soil by heavy rainfall.

A more intensive and longer-lasting method is to bury buckets of hair meal pellets at the edge of the field or bed. The hair meal pellets then become moist, e.g. due to rainfall, and stink fiercely. This has even been used to deter dogs from vegetable fields, even though they usually like to eat hair meal pellets.

Good deterrent effects were reported for rabbits, wild boar and roe deer - there was contradictory feedback on hares. As rabbits, for example, avoid a feeding site once it has been recognised as unsuitable for a longer period of time, the deterrent effect lasts longer than the odour.

As with all biological methods, there are many factors that influence the results, such as the feeding pressure of the animals or heavy downpours that wash the pellets into the soil.
